Nearby, sprawling and traffic-choked Place de la Bastille was the site of an infamous prison until the 1789 revolution. Today it’s distinguished by the modern Opéra Bastille on its eastern side and the 52-meter-high Colonne de Juillet at its center. Venture away from the main roads to the south and you might be surprised to stumble onto the candy-colored rue Crémieux and the Bassin de l’Arsenal, a pretty working port that could have been transported straight from the south of France. It’s a lovely spot for a peaceful walk, as is the Coulée Verte—an old railway line converted into an elevated walkway—that starts just a short stroll away.

A little farther east, those in search of the unusual shouldn’t miss the astonishing Musée des Arts Forains, dedicated to the world of fairground arts; and the cool arts space and street food venue, Ground Control.
